Welcome Siena
Pickleballers and all of you who are thinking about getting involved
in America's fastest growing sport. The sport of Pickleball was created
on Brainbridge Island in 1965 by U.S, Congressman Joel Pritchard from the state
of Washington and his neighbors, Bill Bell and Barney McCallum. It started as a
pastime activity on an asphalt badminton court in the Congressman's backyard.
Missing a birdie to play badminton, the fathers virtually made up a new game for
their kids to play by using a whiffle ball. The badminton rackets didn't work
that well hitting the whiffle ball, so they improvised. Realizing the ball
bounced on the playing surface also created new possibilites. Everybody had a
blast, and the very next week they sat down to write down the rules by borrowing
the concepts from other sports like tennis, badminton, volleyball, table tennis,
racketball, etc. It got its silly name compliments of the Congressman's dog
Pickles, a Cocker Spaniel. Pickles liked to join in the game and run off with
the ball. Hence, the game was christened with the name "Pickleball." But
that's history. Today, Pickleball is not only played in all 50 states, it has
become a world-wide phenomenon.
Seniors in particular have gravitated to the sport because the skill sets needed to play the game are not necessarily lost due to aging. Pickleball is truly a "thinking person's" game. You don't have to be fast on your feet, but positioning is key. Reflexes improve with play, and fundamentals will win the day. Pickleball is also played in high schools around the country, and the number of schools adding Pickleball to their sports menu is increasing. Players of all ages love this game, and young and old can play this game at parity. Boys, girls, men and women can also play this game at parity. That is what makes Pickleball so appealing.
In September of 2010 we played our first game of Pickleball in Siena. Since then, many Siena residents have learned to play the game, and the numbers have grown to where we are now a chartered club known as "The Siena Pickleballer's Club." Welcome to our web-site. Going forward, you can come here to learn about the sport of Pickleball and when and where you can go to play. So, stay tuned.
Be sure to check out other features on this website. Use the Stategy Guide to improve your game and refer to the Official Rules periodically so you can confidently advise others when introducing them to this fantastic game.
Updates: In the Spring of 2011, the Board approved the painting of permanent lines for 4 Pickleball Courts on Tennis Court #1. The lines were applied in July. We continue to use the temporary nets, but the roll-down lines have been put away for good.
January, 2012 the Board is soliciting bids for the construction of dedicated Pickleball Courts. This is great news! Let's hope they allow us to give them some input. Where will they be?
February, 2012 the Fitness Center purchased a bin to store our nets. What a convenience!
November, 2012, new high quality nets were purchased after Board approval.
January, 2013 the Board makes surprize announcement to build 4 dedicated Pickleball Courts. More to come...............
